Come and enjoy a fabulous day at Portland Basin,
Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire
The Day’s
Itinerary Visit the Portland Basin Museum - housed within the restored nineteenth
century Ashton Canal Warehouse the museum combines a lively modern interior
with a peaceful canal side setting. Portland Basin Museum is an exciting family friendly museum, with
something for all the family! Step back in time on the 1920s street, as the sights and sounds of
bygone years are brought to life. Take a look into the kitchen and parlour
to find out how we used to live. You can rediscover what we did before
television and computer games, how much a “special” cost in a 1920s Chip
Shop and what it was like to work in the local mills and mines. In addition throughout the year there are various visiting exhibitions
to enjoy. Enjoy a traditional 2 course lunch at the fabulous edit@portland basin
restaurant where all special dietary needs can be catered for. Your meal
will be complete with tea or coffee but if you fancy something stronger a
licensed bar is available. Lunch will be followed by a canal boat trip along the Peak Forest
Canal. The Canal extends for 23 km (14 1/2 miles) from Portland Basin to
Buxworth, passing through Dukinfield, Hyde, Woodley and Marple, with a
short branch at its end to Whalley Bridge and some spectacular features on
route. On your return you will be served a traditional afternoon tea in our
cobbled courtyard (weather permitting).
